Tio Chango

Steen Thorsson aka DJ TioChango lives in Berlin and works as an author, filmmaker, DJ and music producer. He has set up his own music label and works as a music editor for various radio stations. Tio Chango mixed his first records for a handful of friends at home and in small bars. In 2002 he joined forces with his buddies Tooroque, Paco Mendoza and FlaCo to set up La Clave Soundsystem (Cologne). In 2006, he and his colleagues DJ Trece, Don Chicharron and Paquito Scratchero created La Chusma, the now legendary and world-famous collective of DJs and producers. In 2010, DJ Tio Chango and DJ Don Chicharron set up Berlin-based label Chusma Records. Tio Chango has lived in various parts of Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela). During his time in the southern hemisphere, he engaged intensely with the region’s ongoing social struggles. But he was also interested in old and new music and in “cultura popular” or street and barrio culture. His record collection contains countless gems by still undiscovered vintage musicians and his knowledge of Afro-Latin American culture and music has grown steadily in the course of his many stays in the region.

Es autor, director de cine, DJ y productor musical, fundador del sello discográfico berlines “Chusma Records” y redactor musical en diversos programas de radio. TioChango mezcla los primeros discos para algunos amigos en casa y en pequeños bares. En 2002 funda en Colonia con sus compañeros Tooroque, Paco Mendoza & FlaCo el soundsystem La Clave. En 2006 crea con sus colegas DJ Trece, Don Chicharrón y Paquito Scratchero el ya legendario colectivo de DJ & productores La Chusma. Desde 2010 DJ TioChango gestiona con DJ Don Chicharrón el sello berlinés Chusma Records.

Ha vivido en distintas partes de Latinoamérica como Chile, Argentina y Colombia y también ha pasado mucho tiempo en Venezuela. Durante el periodo pasado en America Latina apoyó diferentes luchas sociales allí dominantes. Sin embargo, otro de sus intereses ha sido la música moderna y antigua y también la cultura popular de calles y barrios. En su colección de discos puede encontrarse un gran número de tesoros antiguos de músicas desconocidas, y sus conocimientos sobre la cultura y la música de la zona afrolatinoamericana ha ido ampliándose a lo largo de sus numerosas estancias.

Die ersten Platten mixt TioChango für ein paar Freunde zuhause und in kleinen Bars. 2002 gründet er mit den Kompanen Tooroque, Paco Mendoza & FlaCo das La Clave Soundsystem Köln. 2006 entsteht mit seinen Kollegen DJ Trece, Don Chicharron und Paquito Scratchero das mittlerweile legendäre und weltweit bekannte DJ & Produzenten Kollektiv La Chusma. Seit 2010 betreibt DJ TioChango mit dem DJ Don Chicharron das Berliner Label Chusma Records.

Er hat schon in verschiedenen Teilen Lateinamerikas wie Chile, Argentinien und Kolumbien gelebt und ebenso längere Zeit in Venezuela verbracht. In seiner Zeit in America Latina unterstützte er verschiedene soziale Kämpfe wie z.B. in Argentinien 2002/2003. Sein Interesse galt aber auch der neuen und alten Musik und der „cultura popular“ der populären Kultur auf der Strasse und den Barrios. In seiner Plattensammlung sind unzählige alte Schätze unbekannter Musiken zu finden und sein Wissen um Kultur und Musik im Afro-Lateinamerikanischen Raum ist im Laufe seiner vielen Aufenthalte dort immer größer geworden.
